The curious case of the Missing Whistleblower

In 1967, George Phillips, the Government’s Treasurer had tipped off the press that he would be making a major announcement in the House of Commons on Monday morning. Rumours swirled that a clandestine project had been funded for many years and Philips forensic ability to unpick ledgers had uncovered a trail of activity whose purposes were deemed by him to be ‘influenced by malign foreign powers and below the standard of any British institution’.

Philips had tipped off Sunday Times political correspondent Jason Fallows at the bar on Friday night. On Monday morning, Phillips failed to show up in the Commons. His secretary was sent to his flat at but there was no answer. The next day, the police were sent to the address who again had no success. After
